How do you get straight cuts with a circular saw? I like to use a speed square as my guide when cutting a crosscut on lumber 12 inches or less. The speed square creates a completely perpendicular guide as I’m cutting. Be sure draw your cut line all the way to the edge of the wood and lift the guard of the circular blade to line up the blade with the cut line. Once your saw is at the right spot, butt the speed square against the saw shoe and you've got a perfectly perpendicular guide.
How do you get straight cuts with a circular saw on cuts longer than 12 inches? You can apply the same principles as stated above with a 4-foot level (or something straight like a 2x4) and clamps. Simple figure out the distance from the circular saws shoe and the blade, subtract it from the overall length of the cut, and clamp the 4-foot level to that line. Now no need to worry about following the line with your circular saw, just run it along the 4-foot level as its guide!
