Furniture Plans: 4-Foot Classy Crown Wall Shelf

The decorative 4-Foot Classy Crown Wall Shelf makes a beautiful place to display photos and other decorations and also provides a practice application to hang backpacks, coats, hats and even Christmas stockings. It is fairly simply to build with basic tools such as a table saw and a miter saw.

Dimensions

The overall size of the project is 4 feet wide by 12 inches tall.

• Pneumatic 18 gauge brad nail gun and air compressor*

*Recommended but you substitute them for 2 inch to 2 ½” finish nails.
**Recommended but you could buy mounting hardware in lieu of the keyhole.

Lumber

• ¾ inch x 2 foot x 4 foot Medium Density Fiberboard Handy Panel (HD Model # 1508112 Store SKU # 219743)
• Crown molding (we used LWM48 9/16 in. x 4-1/4 in. MDF Crown Moulding HD Model # HDFB48 Store SKU # 491326, but you could really use whatever crown style you prefer around the 4 inch size)
• Upside down chair rail cap (we used Veranda 8 ft. x 1-1/8 in. x 9/16 in. Polymer Ply Cap Moulding HD Model # 0526208025 Store SKU # 901483 or you could use LWM292 9/16 in. x 1-1/16 in. Hemlock Wood Base Cap Moulding HD Model # HDH292 Store SKU # 964138)

Materials

Cut List

• Cut the top piece from the ¾ inch MDF at 48 inches long by 5 inches wide.
• Cut the back piece from the ¾ inch MDF at 39 ½ inches long by 11 ¼ inches wide.
• The crown and chair rail wainscot cap is cut to fit (39 ½ inches along the front and ¾ along the side)

Instructions

Step 1:  The first step is to cut out the top and back pieces.

Step 2:  If you have a keyhole router bit (one like this), place keyholes in the back piece about 2/3 to ¾ of the way up.

Step 3:  Join the top and back piece together with Kreg Jig Screw on the back. Center the back piece with the top piece.

Step 4:  Measure and cut the crown and chair rail wainscot cap to wrap around the ¾” MDF bottom. Nail them in with an 18 gauge finish nail gun using 5/8 inch - 1 inch brad nails (you can secure them with construction adhesive as well). Click for tips on cutting crown molding and creating a tight crown molding joint.

Step 5:  Fill in the holes with wood filler, sand and paint.

Step 6:  Measure out the spacing for the decorative hooks and drill pilot holes with around a 3/32 inch drill bit (these can be very shallow holes—you just need them to guide the screw). Then screw the hooks in with their screws and mount your shelf.
